Inhalant abuse is the deliberate inhalation of fumes, vapors or gases to “get high.” Two common terms for it are Sniffing or Huffing. More than 1,400 household, office and school products are abused and easily available for abuse. Inhalant Abuse can start early. They are the high of choice for 6-12 year olds. One assessment showed that 26% (1 in 4) children in 6th grade have used inhalants with some continuing the abuse through adulthood. Inhalants are the fourth most abused substances after cigarettes, alcohol, and marijuana. Inhalants can lead to later abuse of illegal drugs.
